Destination 2012: Philippines

Map picture

Our big international trip for 2012 was the Philippines, primarily to introduce my husband Chris to my extended family on both sides and to experience our Honeymoon 2.0 at Apulit Island in Palawan. Here are our trip logistics in a nutshell…

  • Timeline: 3 weeks in mid-February to early March
  • Flights: Philippine Airlines direct flight from Vancouver to Manila, 14 hours YVR-MNL and 11 hours MNL-YVR
  • Exchange Rate: PHP 41-43 = USD 1
  • Optional side trip: Hong Kong, Macau

When traveling in Manila, a car and driver are a must! Luckily, my aunt (we were travelling with my mom’s sisters) hired her former driver to take us around and my uncle’s van was available for us to borrow.

We spent two out of the three weeks in Manila, where we spent most of our time shopping, eating and attending get-togethers organized by family and friends. Food goes hand-in-hand with social events and it’s impossible to NOT gain weight in the Philippines… everything is so delicious! I definitely got my food fix!I’ve devoted a post to this in my other blog. Smile Aside from the food, I bought and was gifted with a lot of native crafts like statement necklaces, woven runners/coasters/placemats, and strings of pearls and pearl earrings. I also enjoyed some cheap deep-tissue massages. At $15 including tip, you can’t go wrong! Other trip-wins: getting my Samsonite suitcase handle fixed for less than $4, attending a concert by 70’s Original Pilipino Music (OPM) stars, and got some beautification done at a reasonable price (< $100).

I’ll post snippets from our side trips in the following entries. Paalam (goodbye)! Hanggang sa susunod (till next time)!
